Liposuction
Many of our patients in La Jolla and elsewhere in San Diego choose to undergo liposuction as a way of refining their body's silhouette. Liposuction uses specialized suction equipment to remove small areas of fat from the hips, buttocks, neck, thighs, or just about any other area of the body. Liposuction Patient Assessment
Both the beautiful weather and health-conscious culture in San Diego mean that increasing numbers of area residents are seeking liposuction as a way to enhance the results of their fitness regimens. The best candidates for liposuction are those who are healthy and seeking to remove only a small amount of fat in select areas of the body, such as the abdomen, waist, arms, chin, neck, and "saddle bags."
It is important to note that liposuction is not a weight loss solution. If you are thinking of coming to our La Jolla practice for liposuction, you should ensure that you have reached your target weight first.
Both men and women can benefit greatly from liposuction. Women tend to have problem areas such as the hips, thighs, and belly treated, while men often come to us for treatment of gynecomastia, or enlarged breast tissue, and flanks. Liposuction can also be used in conjunction with facial plastic surgery for optimal results.
Liposuction Procedure
Our cosmetic surgeons use one of two types of liposuction, depending on the areas being treated and the desired result:
Tumescent liposuction, most commonly used at our La Jolla facility, is a method of liposuction in which saline solution and anesthetic are delivered to the targeted area via injection. This injection makes it easier for doctors to remove fat cells without damaging other tissue.
Ultrasonic liposuction is used in areas that are composed of dense or fibrous tissue, such as that found in the male waist, breasts, and back, as well as the upper abdomen of both men and women. To break up fat tissue and prepare it to be suctioned out of the body, doctors use an ultrasonic wand to liquefy the fat cells.
Liposuction Recovery
After the liposuction procedure is complete, bandages are applied to the incision sites and a compression garment is put in place. Wearing the garment helps the skin re-adhere to the treated area.
For the first few days after surgery, our San Diego liposuction patients usually feel moderate discomfort, which can be greatly reduced with pain medication. Bruising and swelling will diminish with time, usually within three to six weeks depending on the area treated and patients' individual healing process.
Liposuction Results
After targeted areas of fat have been removed, our patients notice that their body features appear to be more in proportion with each other. Lumps and bumps give way to smooth contours, improving the fit of clothing and, in many cases, enhancing self-esteem.
