Your face is the first thing that people notice about you. Unfortunately, it is also the first area of your body to become affected by sun damage, aging, and everyday stress. At our plastic surgery practice in San Diego, you can choose to undergo rhinoplasty, laser resurfacing, blepharoplasty, a facelift, or a number of other plastic surgery procedures to rejuvenate your face or achieve the look you've always dreamed of.
Cosmetic surgery is not always the complete answer for effective facial rejuvenation. Patients who are pleased with their overall appearance but would like to improve the texture and coloration of their skin are encouraged to talk to our San Diego Facial Plastic Surgeons about laser resurfacing, the most modern way to reduce and eliminate the appearance of imperfections in the skin.
Laser resurfacing is an excellent option for patients who have fine lines around the lips, "crow's feet" around the eyes, and deeper wrinkles around the nose and mouth (called nasolabial wrinkles). In addition to wrinkles, laser resurfacing can effectively treat the appearance of acne scarring, hyperpigmentation, and other skin irregularities.
At our San Diego Cosmetic Surgery Practice, your comfort during laser resurfacing is of the utmost importance. All anesthesia is administered by an MD anesthesiologist. The type of anesthesia used depends upon whether a full face or partial face resurfacing is being performed. Full face laser resurfacing requires general anesthesia, during which the patient is completely asleep. Partial face laser resurfacing involves an IV sedative that will make the patient groggy and a localized anesthetic that will eliminate any pain.
Using the advanced Sharplan™ CO2 laser, the cosmetic surgeon will use a laser beam of light to resurface the skin by removing the epidermis and portions of the dermis. The laser is passed over the desired areas one to four times depending upon the desired result and specified treatment. After treatment, the skin is bandaged in a protective covering that remains in place for a few days.
After undergoing laser resurfacing, a patient should expect several days of crusting and scabbing. The minimal post-operative pain is easily controlled with prescription medication. The most common visual evidence of laser resurfacing is redness in the face; this aftereffect is usually gone within weeks.
Laser resurfacing allows the skin on the face to have a "fresh start." Fine lines around the eyes and mouth are lessened, and acne scars and hyperpigmentation are reduced or even eliminated. Our San Diego laser resurfacing patients even report that they experience some skin tightening in the jowl and neck region.
