For most women, their breasts represent their femininity. When breast volume is lost due to weight loss, aging, or pregnancy, self-confidence may suffer as a result. Other women may be unhappy that their breasts never developed to the size they'd like. We offer both saline and silicone breast implants. Silicone implants are now approved by the FDA. The selection of breast implants available today make it possible to customize an implant to a woman’s breast shape and body type for the most natural looking result. Our La Jolla Breast Surgery Practice uses breast implants from major Breast Implant Manufacturer Mentor. Breast augmentation surgery uses saline, or in some cases silicone, implants to enlarge and shape the breasts. Most of our patients receive round saline implants placed under the muscle; this disguises the outline of the implant and produces natural looking breasts.
Based on the number of breast augmentation surgeries completed at our practice and the quality of our results, our surgeons were selected to participate in a Mentor and Inamed silicone breast implant study. During these studies, we were able to provide a select number of our San Diego breast augmentation and reconstructive patients with silicone gel implants.
Women who come to our La Jolla practice for breast augmentation surgery do so for a number of reasons. Beyond the patients who feel that their breasts are too small, many women choose augmentation as a way to balance the size of uneven breasts, regain volume after pregnancy, or simply to gain a better proportion between their breasts and the rest of the body.
Many women find that their goals are best met by combining breast augmentation with breast lift surgery, which results in not only increased breast volume but also a more youthful silhouette. In other cases, additional plastic surgery procedures for body contouring or facial plastic surgery will provide the best overall results. Patients also have the option of choosing implants from both Mentor and Inamed.
The location of the incision will depend greatly upon the patient's body type and the doctor's recommendation. There are three possible incision locations, including:
Once the incision has been made, the breast surgeon will carefully create a pocket beneath either the breast tissue or the chest muscle and insert the breast implants. The decision of implant placement is made during initial consultations and depends on the patient's aesthetic goals.
Before leaving our San Diego Breast Surgery Office, breast augmentation patients will be bandaged and dressed in a special support bra that is worn for a few weeks after surgery to aid in healing. Any discomfort can easily be managed with pain medication.
Patients are usually able to return to work within a week of breast augmentation, and can resume all other normal activities after two to four weeks. Scars will begin to fade after a few months.
Most women who receive breast implants from our plastic surgery center are overwhelmingly satisfied with their results. They find that shopping for clothes and participating in summer activities are far more pleasurable, and usually report an increased sense of self-confidence.
