Breast Reduction
Women with overly large breasts may wish to have them reduced for medical as well as cosmetic reasons. Breasts that are out of proportion with the rest of the body can cause back and neck pain, headaches, and breathing problems. In addition, teenagers and women with this problem often experience diminished self-esteem and anxiety that limits their enjoyment in many everyday activities.
Breast Reduction Patient Assessment
Candidates for breast reduction surgery, also called reduction Mammoplasty, include women whose large breasts cause one or more of the following conditions:
- Back, shoulder, or neck pain
- Indentations in the skin of the shoulders from bra straps
- Poor posture
- Rashes or acne in the crease beneath the breasts
Women who have breasts of two different sizes may also consider breast reduction surgery to reduce the size of the larger breast.
Breast Reduction Breast Reduction Procedure
Depending upon the size of the reduction and insurance coverage, the procedure may be performed in our outpatient La Jolla Breast Surgery Center,. Breast reduction surgery involves incisions that follow the contour beneath the breast and around the areola. After creating the incisions, the surgeon removes excess tissue, fat and skin on the sides and bottom of the breast. The nipple, areola and underlying tissue are then moved upward and recontoured.
Breast Reduction Recovery
The tissue sutures used in breast reduction surgery are usually invisible beneath the skin and will dissolve after healing is complete. Patient goes home with light dressing and a support bra. Sutures are usually invisible under the skin and will dissolve after healing is complete. Scars on the skin's surface are unavoidable, but with proper care they will fade, becoming very faint over the next 6 to 18 months.
Breast Reduction Results
Breast reduction patients can look forward to smaller, more proportional breasts, as well as an end to breast-related back and neck pain.
